Jubilee: Proclaiming the Favorable Year of the Lord

Jubilee: Proclaiming the Favorable Year of the Lord
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3 [NASB, emphasis added]

Nobody likes to miss Golden Jubilee. As I write this, I receive exciting phone calls telling me to come home for Jubilee. Indeed, any Jubilee is very exciting! However, I used to wonder what Jubilee is all about, didn’t you? Read along with me as I attempt to address it in this short article.
 What is Jubilee?
Nowadays, Jubilee is understood as many things. We even have Silver and Platinum Jubilee. The word Jubilee comes from Leviticus 25:8-10 which refers to the year after every seven sabbatical years, i.e. the 50th year. The basis for this commandment is the Sabbath (meaning “rest”). God created everything in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. Every 7th day is a Sabbath, every 7th year is a sabbatical year. Israelites shall work for 6 years and cease to work in the 7th year. They don’t need to worry because God promises miraculous harvest in the 6th year for them to survive till the harvest time of the 8th year. Seven sabbatical years equal 49 years, and therefore the 50th year (Sabbath of the Sabbatical Years) is known as the Jubilee.
 Significance of Jubilee
Long before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, God gave this commandment to them through Moses on Mount Sinai to be taken seriously. However, there is no record in or outside the Bible about Israelites observing Jubilee. 2 Chronicles 36:21 indicates that the Israelites were taken to Babylonian exile because they failed to observe it. How they failed to observe it is not difficult for us to surmise as we have read the incident of Israelites going out to gather manna on Sabbath, even when Moses had commanded them not to (Exodus 16:22-36). They wouldn’t trust the power of God to sustain them.
 Jesus, our Jubilee
Apart from the themes of rest and trusting God, Jubilee is also to set captives free: free from slavery, free from debts, and allowing them to start afresh (Leviticus 25). This is what Isaiah is alluding to in Isaiah 61:1-3. In the book of Isaiah, we see him prophesying judgment and the coming Babylonian captivity of Judah. He also prophesied the Salvation of God to His people, especially in his last 27 chapters. He foresaw their mourning, and in effect is saying, “Rejoice for Salvation has come.” This passage is not exactly about the literal Jubilee of Leviticus 25, but in the words of John F.A. Sawyer, it is ‘a sermon on it.’
The phrase in v1, “to proclaim liberty” and in v2, “to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord” is the essence of Jubilee. According to v1, this is what the anointed prophet (Messiah) would be doing at the end of the exile. He comes to comfort His people, which is likened to the joy of Jubilee. The actions described in Isaiah 61 is not something the nation had done, nor could a mere prophet like Isaiah accomplish it. In Luke 4:17-21, Jesus said that it is fulfilled in Him.
 What to Proclaim?
The ultimate purpose of this proclamation is the glory of God, and its effect is the joy of the people clothed with the garment of praise (v3). Let’s focus only on the phrase “to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord” of verse 2.  The infinitive ‘to proclaim’ has the idea of drawing someone’s attention to establish contact. It is intentional and true for all, and accessible to all the hearers.
The message is the ‘favorable year’ of the Lord. It means it is the year acceptable and pleasing to God. There is no more condemnation, punishment or banishment. Isaiah foresaw their suffering and mourning in exile due to the judgment of God. Now, God is going to show His mercy on them. Isaiah contrasted their (present) suffering and (promised) joy in such a way that it looks nonsensical to neglect this proclamation. He pictured them as if they are yearning eagerly for this favorable year when they would come back to their land, rebuild their home and society. What a comfort for them at last!
This favorable year is ‘of’ the Lord. The people do not deserve, nor can they coerce or cajole God; it is the sheer acts of God’s Jubilee. God is the planner and He shall be the fulfiller too. Salvation is of the Lord.
 Why celebrate Jubilee?
First of all, our Jubilee is not that of Leviticus 25 for a few reasons. a) We aren’t Jews, but Christians; the Jubilee was good news to Israel, but not necessarily to non-Israelite. b) We aren’t under the Mosaic covenant, but the new covenant; we aren’t promised the miracles of the 6th year. c) We don’t have any property assigned to us by God. Moreover, it also means we shouldn’t expect the blessing of Jubilee (cancellation of debts, returning of lands, etc.) without considering these facts.
We celebrate Jesus, the true Jubilee. In him is the forgiveness of sins, and the deliverance from slavery to sin and from the yoke of Satan. We are given the citizenship of heaven. We are made acceptable to the holy God. We are made sons and heirs of God. Our treasure is laid up in heaven. We are clothed with the righteousness of God. We are indwelled by the Spirit of God to live a just and godly life.
We Christians continue to proclaim this truth until the return of Christ that it is the favorable year of the Lord. As 2Cor. 6:2 reiterates, now is the acceptable time for salvation. If you have not received Christ, wouldn’t it be joyful to hear Him say, “Come to me you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out, but give eternal life” (Matt 11: 33; John 6:37; 10:28)? And must we not be faithful to His calling as He has been faithful to us all these 50 years? And when we pursue Christlikeness, all the significance and implications of Jubilee shall make sense to us and others!

Mass Conversion In India - An Analysis

pictorial representation (not actual)

THE ANALYSIS OF MASS MOVEMENTS IN INDIA

I.                  Introduction

Mass conversion to Christianity is happening among both Roman Catholics and Protestants. The effectiveness of “mass conversion” must be a matter of serious concern for every church planter. A study done in 1928 by a team on mass movement is the major background for this article. That study was the first critical survey of mass movements in India. It was financially supported by the Institute of Social and Religious Research, New York in association with the National Christian Council of India. At the onset, a few definitions are given so that the terms are rightly understood in the context.

Mass-Movement is said to happen when a group (not necessarily everyone, but more than a family) is accustomed to exercise social and religious authority over the life of individuals that compose the group. It happens not just in Christianity, but also in Hinduism. Caste- It is not easy to define. Though it can be divided into four types, in practice it is more than hundreds. It is more than the ancestral occupation. For example, some Brahmin serves, and also some Sudras become warriors and kings. Outcast does not mean ostracized. It means untouchable by higher caste such as by a Brahmin. When somebody is ostracized based on defying caste, he is as good as dead. He can either take refuge in the lower caste or just be lost. A person cannot exist outside the group (caste) in a normal village environment.

Now the below discussion has been divided under various headings to trace from its inception and also to highlight the strength and weakness to serve as a guiding policy for future Church planting.

II.               How these Churches came into existence?

One person will be saved and on account of this person after a few months or a year, or a good amount of group will be converted. This is how Churches were founded. Such type of phenomenon can be noted with the Chuhras caste in Punjab, Karens in Burma, Gonda caste in Patna, Mehras in Bastar, Mala caste in Raghavapuram, Gara caste in Orissa, Uraons & Mundas in Chhota Nagpur, and the Chamars in Ghaziabad (The founders of the Indian Church by Dr. Donald A. McGavran). The powerful Christian testimony of the particular individual was the magnet that attracted others also to the Gospel.

III.           Social and Economic Background of the Converts

·        Social

The survey documents reveal that the mass converts are low caste people. They are poor, illiterate, and exploited by the higher caste people. They face untouchability, restriction of trading rights, service deprivations, difficulty in getting drinking water, discrimination in schools, and were enforcing themselves an attitude of inferiority. Initially, they faced lots of persecution for their conversion. This would also cause a few people to turn back to Hinduism.

·        Economic

Mass-movement seems to happen only among poor people. However, the survey documents show that a few well-to-do people are influenced after seeing the lifestyle of these converted people. The survey reveals the following pattern of the people. Caste places restrictions against acquiring wealth and so they were very poor. The sources of income of these people are like labor work in fields in villages, coolie, labor in town and cities, owning agricultural lands, cattle, goats, and poultry. People also emigrating from villages for better opportunities like sweepers, servants in hotels, domestic services, stone cutters, clerks, chowkidars,(a few teachers, doctor, nurse). They are in heavy debts and sometimes forced to do labor, work without pay. They struggle with the very basic need for food and also an average person has one or two meals per day.

IV.           Strengths of the influence of Mass conversion on the converts

The survey paints a good picture regarding mass-movement conversion for the following reasons.

·        Social

They have stopped responding to karma as they worship the “true God”. They have a desire to share the blessings with others. Social status has improved due to personal cleanness and education.

·        Economic

Mission agencies were willing to support the converts. They came forward to help depressed people through health service and better housing. The new lifestyle reduced wasteful expenditure and their education enabled better employment and more money.

·        Spiritual

In the church, believers were growing spiritually by practicing and memorizing creedal knowledge. The believers gave importance to Sunday for attending the church. The Church was very strict concerning family and marriage.

·        Witnessing

After getting converted evil practices were cut down in villages like gambling, eating dead meat, sorcery practices. Changes that took place, in honesty and changes of the temperament of convert are worth noting. New practices took over like– worshiping God, singing hymns, and church service. These allowed them to witness the Gospel. People of the villages noticed that changes in them. Thus they could witness through their good behavior as noted down earlier.

·        Schools

The initiative to start schools was a great blessing. The motives were to equip them to read the Bible, to train the next generation, and for the abatement of social oppression and poverty. Mass movements lead to the common idea of planting the Church and Schools. They were able to get a good education which led to their socio-economic growth.

V.              Weaknesses of the influence of Mass conversion on the converts

·        Social

The woman started taking the lead in certain settings even in Churches. The issue of child marriage still persisted. Westernization was adopted.

·        Economic

Imitational expenses were high.

·        Spiritual

Indiscipline was observed in Church services in the form of interruptions and distractions. Practicing Idolatry and the use of charms still continued among some. Church administration was in Chaos. Less instruction before baptism, baptism was given in the mass/mela, and also systematic teaching/discipleship was lacking after the mass conversion. Poverty in the initial days caused them to depend on the missionary agencies to support. Church Discipline was not firmly practiced and also the Pastor showed partiality in certain cases. Pastoral care also lacked leading to stunted Christian growth. This could be the main reason why the Sudra community mass converts engaged in remarriage and other vile things even though once they were boldly proclaiming  Jesus Christ.

·        Schools

The focus changed from evangelizing to the development of the community and the missionaries were heavily burdened. The literacy program was not also very successful.

VI.           What do we learn from Mass movements?

We live in a time where people criticize mass conversion movements. They criticize the motives underlying Mass-movement conversion. Some believe that it is a heresy and is entirely secular and most of them– unworthy. Some became Christian for materialistic gain. Mass-movement is not a missionary method. We cannot practice or create it. There are lots of incidents telling us to be very cautious about it. However, multitudes are coming to know the Truth as they bring along with their relatives and neighbors. Moreover, in Indian villages, the caste group is the chief center of influence for effective witnesses.

VII.       Conclusion

 We must be thankful that the mass conversions took place according to the sovereign will of God. However, as enlightened by the survey results we should not be satisfied at this point. If so, all our suspicion (nominal Christian, westernization, heresy, self-righteousness) would become true. We should be doing more. We should disciple the converted souls. They should be equipped with the sound doctrine for a strong conviction. The mass movement lacked proper Church administration. So it is highly mandated that this movement needs more pastoral care, fellowship and must be organized under proper leadership.

Will a million dollars make you 'feel' rich?

This post was originally texted (months ago) to a friend through WhatsApp for humor. It is posted here, unaltered and unmodified. Hopefully, it will make you think through many issues: true ultimate treasure (Christ), contentment, economics, saving, providence, rich-poor-middle, and even to appreciate good novels and movies.
```RICHEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE (MATERIALLY)```
I saw a prediction that Elon Musk could be the world's first trillionaire. There are over 2816 billionaires and 46.8 million millionaires in the world. BTW, that's calculated in US dollars. We are from India, and most of us aren't even a lakhpati (that's just 1321 US dollars anyway). We have only a few thousands or hundreds in our wallet. Even some of our well-salaried friends couldn't maintain $1000 saving at any given time.
Last evening I was going through my diaries and journal to find out the richest moment of my life. I was richest last year, on February 03, 2019, I had 61,000 rupees (equals $806 only). But by the next day, 04 February, I was reduced to 20,000 because I paid my landlord 41,000 rupees as the rent fees. For someone who stepped into a ministry with less than 500 rupees (equals only 6 dollars) in his wallet, and the Lord providing thus far is indeed a story of providence.
Well, that's not a lot of  money, but do you realize that 21,000 people die every day without food in their stomachs? Hmmm, that puts things into proper perspective! In my school days, Slam Books were very popular. One of the most interesting ‘fill up the blanks’ was "If I were a millionaire, I would____." Now, in my almost 30s, methinks becoming a millionaire (7 figure) is not easy after all. Often it’s the 4 figure (that too in Rupees) is what many of us have.
There are millions of millionaires and millions of people dying out of hunger on our earth. Fortunately, we are neither of them, but that could make us Pharisees if we complain against the rich and not care about the poor. After all, no matter how much or little we have, we want more and not lesser.
We treasure what we have. And in the word of our Lord, where our treasure is, there our hearts will be. The Lord of the Rings Movie demonstrated that graphically as Gollum, Bilbo and even Frodo adored the ring frequently and said "My Precious" throughout the movie. And like the Gandalf and Samwise we must be quick to act if and when we take pleasure (or take a breath of relief) in our possession.
John Piper Syndrome
Are there some important issues in your life which you find so perplexing to affirm them or to deny them? Issues that most people seem to know for certain but you are very uncertain. Issues that you have to act upon them because they are very crucial and pressing.
Well, we all have. I would like to call such a mental condition, "John Piper Syndrome" because I like Dr. John Piper and would like to name after him. By the way, that's tongue in cheek too! He is a godly man, and it's because of that I can afford to make fun of him. Certainly, you wouldn't want to make fun of Kim Jong Un. He would evaporate you!
John Piper is an interesting influential guy with intriguing undecided issues. His other influential friends are certain, but he wonders how they are certain. Sometimes he would attempt to get along with them, sometimes he would not. His very certain friends would call him out when he is not in line with them!
This is about Piper, Grudem, MacArthur, and White on the issues of speaking in tongues and the presidential election of America! The first issue is very important for all Christians in the world. The second issue is important for Christians of America particularly. Piper is uncertain about these issues while those three are very certain!
Grudem believes in charismatic gifts that speaking in tongues, a gift of healings, and prophecy still must be sought after by our present church until the return of the Lord. He wrote many books including one of the most influential Systematic Theology books promoting it. John Piper is caught praying for the gift of tongues in a video. His other friend, MacArthur, on the other hand, believes those specific gifts cease to exist in our time, and called out John Piper for his uncertainty in the 2013 Strange Fire Conference. However, MacArthur was sympathetic towards him and he even wrote a letter of plea to charismatic friends. You will find that letter in the book, Strange Fire.
Grudem believes Trump is a better choice than Biden. MacArthur also believes so. They will vote for Trump and will pray for Trump re-election. Piper believes Biden is disqualified and doesn't want to even talk about him, but he has lots of questions for those who favor Trump. Again Grudem has written a long letter to Anti-Trump Christian Friends. Yesterday Piper puts up a new article to which James White responds by calling him out.
That's what and why and how I call John  Piper Syndrome!
Thinking through Pope Francis' Comments on Same-Sex Civil Union
My 2 Cents on Pope Francis’ view on Same-Sex Civil Unions
I'm sure I'm not a primary source of information for you regarding this news. Nor have I ever thought of myself to be an authoritative guy for anyone especially on news such as this. So, if you're reading this, I will assume that you've read from primary and authoritative sources already. Or you can watch the documentary when it is out. I'd like to tackle this issue differently as I often do, to give 2 cents on some current issues for my regular and random blog readers. (Actually, I have posted this article on some WhatsApp groups already. This is just a blog version with minor edits and inclusion of links for further reading or watching.)
This month, I've been watching some recommended mathematical movies to appreciate better the contributions of Mathematicians to our society. Yesterday, I watched The Imitation Game, a Benedict Cumberbatch starrer biographical movie of Cambridge Mathematician, Alan Turing. Nobel Prize of Computer Science is named after him as "Turing Award."
The movie is about how he and his team decoded the German Enigma, which helped the Allied forces won the 2nd  World War. The movie also presented the other side of Alan Turing, his homosexual struggle. While I don't know much about the British Law on homosexuality in the early 1900s, the movie presented Alan Turing to be a victim of unenlightened discrimination, which the 21st Century world should condemn.
It makes the movie-goers to ponder, "Why can't we allow homosexuals to live a normal life, they deserve it!" That's what Hollywood Media wants everyone to believe. Well, we need to define what "normal" is and its ramification before anyone advocates that position.
Let's recall some major events in the history of America. By the late 1980s, same-sex "marriage" has become a very hot political issue in America. Republican politicians sponsored a Defense of Marriage Acts bill and eventually signed it into law by a Democratic president, Bill Clinton in 1996. Bill Clinton was not happy about it, but he couldn't go against it because the Congress and the Senate had passed the bill. That bill clearly defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman in section 3.
Perhaps the adage "Laws were made to be broken" is practically true. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (presently the governor of California, who restricts church services in this era of Covid19) defied the marriage law of California, in issuing a marriage license to same-sex couples. Over3000 homosexual couples had been "married," and the court refused to intervene it.
This prompted a Republican president, George Bush to favor the Federal Marriage Amendment Bill in the February of 2004. That amendment bill is a call to protect the institution of marriage as a union of one man and one woman. It was introduced in the Congress from 2002 till 2015, but unfortunately, it was never passed.
Following the endorsement of that bill to protect the institution of marriage by George Bush were attacks and criticism from same-sex activists. Larry King invited Mayor Newsom and an actor Chad to represent their views on CNN. He also invited pastor John MacArthur and a Colorado Congresswoman for a debate against them. You can watch that exchange on YouTube. In that debate, they wanted not only a Same-sex Civil Union but more, they wanted it to be called "marriage," which they got it by 2013 known as the Windsor decision. It struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Acts which was signed into law in 1996 as unconstitutional.
Then, by 2015, which we all remember, "same-sex marriage" has become legal in America through the Obergefell decision, which struck down section 2 of Defense of Marriage Acts 1996 as superseded and unenforceable.
On 6 September 2018, the Supreme Court of India has made homosexuality legal in India. According to that decision, it is not a crime to practice homosexuality. Before that decision, it was punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment. I don't know much about Indian Marriage Law. Last time, I called up a lawyer friend of mine to talk about Marriage Law in India, and I am told India doesn't have a unified marriage law.
In India, Same-Sex Marriage or Same-Sex Civil Union is still not recognized. In 2017, the UniformCivil Code was drafted which would recognize same-sex marriages. BJP became the first political party to support it. However, neither the Code nor same-sex marriages have been legalized until now.  In fact, in February of 2020, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad replied,"Presently, there is no proposal to legalize same-sex marriage."
Even in India that has no Judeo-Christian worldview, a same-sex civil union is not recognized. Even in the fallen whole wide world, the term civil union has become popular only by the late 1990s. The Roman Catholic Church over the centuries does not recognize a same-sex civil union. It is not even to be mentioned as a normal acceptable thing. The Bible condemns homosexuality as a sin. It is not normal behavior, but an abnormal one (Romans 1:18-32). For Pope Francis to endorse Same-Sex Civil Union, in saying "They are children of God and have a right to be in a family" is an embarrassment for Conservative Roman Catholics.
Every human being including homosexuals, drunkards, rapists, liars, down syndrome, the fetus in wombs, etc, are created in the image of God. Therefore we can be called children of God, and one another as brothers and sisters. However, the Bible makes a clear biblical distinction between the children of God and the children of the Devil (1John 3:10). For a religious leader like Pope Francis to say "children of God" loosely in such a setting is very telling.
Furthermore, what kind of right is he talking about by "right to be in a family"? A political right? A God-given right? It is in our DNA, and everything around us shows that only a union of male and female brings forth a baby which constitutes a family, which in turn creates a society, a nation, and a human race. Male-Male or Female-Female doesn't bring forth a baby. It doesn't make a family.
Despite this indictment, it doesn't mean that homosexuals are beyond salvation. It doesn't mean they are more sinful than you and me. It just means we must call sin a sin, and not celebrate it. As much as adultery, fornication, debauchery, and polygamy are sinful, homosexuality is. Jesus came to earth not to condemn sinners but to call sinners to repentance. That's the good news, the gospel, that He came to save us from the penalty, power, and the practice of sins. We must turn away from sins and follow Him. Many early Christians were such (homosexuals, fornicators, drunkards, thieves etc), but they turn away from such and followed Christ (1Cor.6:9-11).
In fact, everyone is a sinner including Abraham, Paul, Peter, John, and Mary. Everyone is called to repent and be His life-long disciples. None of us who are Christians now can look at any sinner including a homosexual and say, "You are more sinful than us!" Genuine Christians are more loathful of their own sins than the sins of others. Thanks be to God, Jesus is our propitiation! (Romans 3:25). If you want to know what and how Jesus becomes our propitiation, I would suggest you read the book of Romans.
[The cultural revolution has invaded all form of institutions, including the church. The sexual revolution of Romans 1:18-32 is highly on display. The view of Pope Francis on this is not a biblically-based conviction. It has nothing to do with the Bible, but a conformation with the dictates of the reprobate minds of the world. Christians are not to be conformed to this world, but be a transforming light and salt to the world. And to talk about the presidential election of USA, Christians are to vote for the party and candidate that align most to the Christian values.]
Thanks for reading and thinking through! You are welcome to post a rejoinder!👍🙏
Something or Nothing?
When we really do
not have anything,
We would like to
have some sort of a thing.
We say, “Something is
better than nothing,”
But ‘Nothing’ is
better than a wrong thing.
Jesus Is The Messiah Predicted In The Old Testament
[I wrote this condensed essay 5 years ago (to be specific on 2nd February 2015). One can write a thick book on it, but I attempted to prove it within just 1300 words. I decided to let the Scripture convince you by these many references. I hope this will be a good resource for anyone who wants to think through this issue. And for my blog readers, remember to visit this post again, when you have a question about it; or when you hear people talking about Jesus and OT; Christianity and Judaism.]
A SHORT CONDENSED ESSAY ON:
“JESUS IS THE MESSIAH PREDICTED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT”
Judaism and Christianity believe that the Old Testament is Scripture that comes from God. We believe that God is the God of the Old Testament. We believe what it says, what it teaches and what it prophesies. We believe that the Old Testament reveals clearly about Messiah (such as in Daniel 9:25-26). Judaism believes that Messiah had never come yet, and is waiting for His coming. Christianity, on the other hand, believes that Jesus is the Messiah who had walked on the earth 2000 years ago. He came as the fulfillment of the OT prophecies, and ascended to heaven, and will come back for His people. Therefore, Christians, too are waiting for the second advent of Christ. The 1st Century Judaism fails to recognize the Messiah in spite of His bodily appearance and His claims. The present Judaism still fails to search the Old Testament in the light of the Christian New Testament. Having said this, even many Christian fail to see Christ in the Old Testament. So this short essay will prove that Jesus is the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament.
WHO AND WHAT MESSIAH IS: Messiah in Hebrew is “mashiyach” (Ps. 132: 17) which means “the anointed”. In Septuagint, it is translated as “Christos” which the New Testament recognizes Jesus as Christos (or Christ, in English). The Old Testament portrays Messiah as the extraordinary king (Jer. 23:5), as the son of man (Daniel 7: 13; Isaiah 7:14), as God (Isaiah 9:6), as Son of God (Ps. 2:7), as Savior (Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12). Thus Messiah is the God-Man (also in Psalm 110). The New Testament understanding of the Messiah is exactly the same (John 12:13; John 1:51; John 8:58; Matt. 14:33; Luke 2:11; John 10:30) and is fulfilled in Lord Jesus Christ. He is the second Person of the Triune-God, whom Christians worship, and He is the God of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments.
GENEALOGICALLY: Messiah would be the descendant of ABRAHAM (Gen 22:18). Here, the seed is the Messiah, through whom the nations of the world shall be blessed. In the New Testament, Gal. 3:16 proves that as Jesus Christ. It is also seen in Matt. 1:1. Messiah would be the descendant of ISAAC (Gen.21:12; 17:19). Isaac is not the only son of Abraham, yet God chose Isaac to be the line of the coming Messiah. The everlasting covenant is possible because Messiah is the everlasting Lord. Matthew 1:2 proves that Jesus is the descendant of Isaac. Messiah would be the descendant of JACOB (Num24:17). He would be a deliverer, protector, a scepter of Israel. Jacob (not Esau) was chosen from the womb (Gen 25: 23). Matt. 1:2 proves Jesus again. He would be from the tribe of JUDAH (Gen. 49:10). Shiloh is the Messiah to whom the peoples shall obey. Luke 3:33 proves that Jesus is from the tribe of Judah.  Messiah would be the descendant of DAVID (Ps. 89:35-36). He would be the heir of David’s throne, for David’s throne to last forever. Matt. 1:1 proves that Jesus is the descendant of David.
GEOGRAPHICALLY: Messiah would come from BETHLEHEM (Micah5:2). He would be the Ruler from everlasting to everlasting. No human comes from everlasting, only God-Man, the Messiah. Luke 2:4-7 tells that Jesus was born at Bethlehem. Messiah would come to JERUSALEM riding in a donkey (Zech. 9:9). Jesus made a triumphant entry to Jerusalem according to John 12:12-15. Messiah would come to the TEMPLE (Malachi 3:1). Jesus went into the temple in Matthew 21:12. Messiah shall be in the GALILEE (Isaiah 9:1, 2). Jesus began His ministry in Galilee (Matt. 4:18-25).
CHRONOLOGICALLY: The Seed of the woman (Gen. 3:15) promised in the Eden Garden is the expected Messiah. Adam and Eve in their holy condition cannot stand against Satan’s temptation, nor would any of their children stand in their fallenness. A perfect man, the Messiah can and has to fulfill the promise. Jesus was born of a woman conceived by the Holy Spirit in Matthew 1:20. He was born at the right time according to Gal. 4:4. Jesus is the promised Seed of the woman because He is the Son of God. Shem, the son of Noah was blessed, and God is adored by Noah as the God of Shem. Noah and his family were the only survivors of the flood. Luke 3:36 traces Jesus as the descendant of Shem, not of Ham or Japheth. God chose Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3) for the lineage of the Messiah. All the nations shall be blessed through him. Before the Israelite enter the Promised Land, Moses talked about the future prophet, whom they must listen (Deut. 18:18-19). The Israelite knew Moses as a deliverer, so the Messiah too will be the deliverer. As the revelation progresses, the prophets spoke that the deliverance is a spiritual one. Then God chose David to be the lineage of the Messiah. Then Davidic throne (Jer. 23:5), Jeremiah prophesied about the coming king, Messiah. Jesus is recognized by the people of His times as the Son of David (Matt. 20:30; 22:42). Messiah was promised right from the Eden garden through His Birth in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Luke 2:15).
THROUGH HIS BIRTH AND NATURE: The Messiah would be born of the virgin woman (Isaiah 7:14). Jesus was born of Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-35; 2:7-11). Messiah is God (Ps 110:1; Matt 22:44; 26:64) since there is only one God, therefore, Jesus is God, the Messiah of the Old Testament’s promise. The coming of the Messiah would be preceded by a messenger (Isaiah 40: 3-5). Jesus was preceded by John the Baptist (Luke 7:24, 27). Moses predicted the coming Prophet in Deut. 18:18-19, who is the Messiah. Jesus was recognized by the people of His days as Prophet (Luke 7:16). The Messiah would be the Priest forever (Ps. 110:4). Jesus has become the High Priest forever (Heb. 7:14-18).
THROUGH HIS MINISTRY AND WORKS: The Spirit of the LORD will be upon the Messiah (Isaiah 11:1; 42:1). Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:16; John 1:32). Messiah will heal the broken-hearted (Isaiah 61:1, 2). Jesus proves Himself to be the Messiah in Luke 4:14-22. Messiah will perform miracles (Isa. 35:4-6; 53:4-5). Jesus performed miracles (Matt. 9:35; John 11:47). Messiah will speak to people in a parable (Ps. 78:2). Jesus came speaking in parables (Matt13:34). Messiah will be betrayed by His friend (Ps. 41:9). Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Luke 22:48). Messiah will not defend Himself (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus spoke no words when He was accused (Matt. 27:12). Messiah will be pierced (Zech. 12:10). Jesus’s side was pierced (John 19:34). Messiah will be numbered with transgressors (Isaiah 53:12). Jesus was crucified with robbers (Matt. 27: 38). Messiah will have a rich tomb (Isaiah 53:9). Jesus was buried in a rich man’s tomb (Matt. 27:57-60). Messiah will be resurrected (Ps. 16: 8-11; Hosea 6:2). Jesus got resurrected (Acts 2:25-35). Messiah will be ascended unto heaven (Ps. 68:18). Jesus was ascended unto heaven (Luke 24:51).
There are still many more proofs in the Bible that I have left out to show Jesus is the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament. Lord Jesus Christ will come back very soon. Christians, Jews, Non-Christians, Atheist, everyone will see that He is the Messiah, Lord, and God of all creations. And every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord. Why not confess today and be saved?
