Bible Reading Reflection from Jeremiah 39-45

"He put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon."

Zedekiah indeed saw the King of Babylon but because of his disobedience, it wasn't for good; he saw no more. The last thing he saw with his eyes was the slaughter of his children and nobles. He was responsible for their cruel death. God had a plan for them to be safe. They including Zedekiah wanted a better solution, and that's how they ended: Slaughtered.

Last year November, a famous Canadian evangelical blogger, Tim Challies lost his son in the USA. Because of travel protocol, it took many days for his dead body to be brought home. When his body finally arrived, they could open the coffin and look at the decomposed body or choose not to.

It was a tough call. It was the last moment the family will ever see his body on this side of heaven. It was their son, they wanted to. But they decided to not look at him because they didn't want that picture of their beloved son to be the last thing they had seen. They preferred to remember the day when he went to America.

Last thing seen matters. Zedekiah had to bear that horror till his death! That's what God has for disobedient people!

"The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, "The LORD your God pronounced this disaster against this place."

Nebuzaradun, the captain of the heathens had a better theology than the priests, prophets, princes, and the king of Israel. And he was kind to Jeremiah unlike them. He esteemed Jeremiah well!

The wise men from the east came to the infant Jesus.

It is said that Genghis Khan used to say, "I am the instrument of God to punish you" whenever he terrorized the cities.

God has revealed enough about who He is and what He requires even outside the Bible and outside the man Jesus. But knowledge of Salvation is only through His Son, through His Word, the Bible.

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸœπŸ™:πŸ™πŸ

"But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon."

A disappointing verse at first read, right? Such a wicked man should be executed, but he escaped. Actually, it's comforting to have such an account in the inspired word of God. That there will be some wicked people who will seem to escape human judgment. And when we see that, we can be reminded that it is not unprecedented. And that the righteous Lord will bring justice, which none will escape. If not in a lifetime, after a lifetime (after death, on the Day of Judgment).

The demand for justice in our today's life is temporary and actually not 100 just. We, Christians should not act like there is no other justice. Actually, God says, "Vengeance is Mine." Not ours!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟜𝟚:𝟚𝟘

“For you have only deceived yourselves; for it is you who sent me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the LORD our God; and whatever the LORD our God says, tell us so, and we will do it.’”

These guys were hypocrites. They pretended to be what they were not. They acted like they wanted to obey God, but clearly, they didn't. To be gracious, let's say they really wanted to obey God if it was according to their likes. But that's using God to serve them. That's slaving God.

They deceived themselves by telling Jeremiah that they wanted to obey God. Well, I am sure I had been like them in some areas, which I ain't comfortable to recall now. But I have also seen a lot of such people.

They would ask for counseling but would reject when they didn't like it. For example, a friend of mine asked me whether he could marry a non-Christian girl, because he wanted to honor God. Well, he married her anyway deceiving himself. He didn't deceive or fool me because I knew his heart was not right. He was fooling himself.

Jeremiah knew these people—their hypocrisy. But since they asked, he told them the truth. And they just disobeyed, not liking what they were told!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸœπŸ›:𝟚

“Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are telling a lie! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, 'You are not to enter Egypt to reside there.'””

This is what people do when they don't want the truth. They don't want to accept it. They don't want to believe it. To the extent that they will suppress the truth with the kind of truth they like. Actually, most people do the best thing, the righteous things. It's just that it's their version, not God's standard. When they deviate from God, nothing's good.

Adam-Eve wanted to be wiser, which looks good to them, and even to us, right? Saul wanted to make a sacrifice to God, which look good to him, and even to us. We commit any sin because it looks good to us at the moment. All this perverted thinking because we don't want to believe.

The Israelites refused to believe and made Jeremiah a liar. Lucky that he wasn't killed. Jesus was accused to be a liar (blasphemer) and they crucified Him! Be not unbelieving, Believe.

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟜𝟜:πŸ™πŸž

"As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you."

Sin hardens hearts! They were collectively openly rebellious. They claimed to be God's people doing what they wanted. We see it in our time as well. Gay and Transgender people are ordained as bishops. I would say even those women who contested to be ordained as pastors!

It's worshipping the queen of heaven, not the God of Heaven!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟜𝟝:𝟝

"And do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not, for behold, I am bringing disaster upon all flesh, declares the LORD. But I will give you your life as a prize of war in all places to which you may go."

Smallest chapter in the book of Jeremiah. And it's a personal message for Baruch, the secretary of Jeremiah.

God sees his hard life and hears his complaints. So, God answers him with a mild rebuke and assurance of God's protection.

Are you seeking after a great thing other than the plan God has for you?

Bible Reading Reflection from Jeremiah 30-38

[Originally posted in a WhatsApp group (JAC), a daily reading update (reflection) from each chapter of the Bible]

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸ˜:πŸ™πŸš-πŸ™πŸœ

"For thus says the LORD: Your hurt is incurable, and your wound is grievous.  There is none to uphold your cause, no medicine for your wound, no healing for you. All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you; for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are flagrant."

The imagery is compared to physical pain and emotional pain. Ruined, abandoned, dying. Yet, God shall restore them again. No darkness is too dark for God. God is not dead. God is alive. He has His purpose for everything.

Satan may lift up. Wicked people may seem to prevail now, but God will raise up His people in a due time. And the present suffering, past suffering, threat, trouble whatever will be like dew in the morning sun. God's grace will outshine every darkness, pain, and suffering!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸ™:𝟚𝟝

"For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish."

Jeremiah 31 has a lot of good stuff. And it is especially known for the New Covenant. But what pleases me most in today's reading is verse 25, that God will satisfy the weary soul. And if someone says, "I am dying, I have lost appetite, I don't want anything" God says, "I will replenish your soul!" Wow! Satisfying and Replenishing.

What are we hungry for and where and how will we be satisfied? Behold the Lord. Are you tired, discouraged, and all your dreams shattered? Behold the Lord!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸš:𝟚𝟟

"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?"

Let's remember that there's such verse in the Bible. God is asking about His power? The answer is "Nothing is too hard for God."

Jeremiah was told to tell the people to live in Babylon happily. Yet for himself, he was told to buy land in Judah. There are some people whom God uses for an object lesson. Why would the children of missionaries die? Are they not some of the most faithful human beings on earth? God told Jeremiah to do many strange things!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸ›:𝟚-πŸ›

"Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it-the LORD is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known."

Wonderful nature of God. Answering God. Ever ready to tell beyond our imagination!

Sometimes, we think we have a great plan, and it looks that it should be reasonable for God to co-operate with usπŸ˜… But He knows and plans to do greater things that have never even come to our imagination yet.

Call on God!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸœ:πŸ›-𝟝

"‘You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’ Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the LORD concerning you: 'You shall not die by the sword. You shall die in peace. And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall burn spices for you and lament for you, saying, "Alas, lord!"' For I have spoken the word, declares the LORD."

This was a good prophecy that turned out to be not that good for Zedekiah because of his sin. He was stupid. He was a coward. He was rebellious. He was proud. He was disobedient. He didn't regard the word of God. He feared men but didn't fear God. Wow! The list of his sins went on and on...

Still, it was fulfilled exactly. He saw Nebuchadnezzar but then his eyes were taken out. Zedekiah wanted freedom from Nebuchadnezzar but he didn't have the character to achieve that, but God decided to give him a peaceful life. Still, he refused to accept even that and rebelled against God and so, though he was given a peaceful life, but without eyes. But what good is that peace without eyes? Perhaps, it wasn't supposed to be that way. God modified his plan, something like that.

Hezekiah was told to get ready for his death. That's great. Did God tell anybody else to get ready for his death? Hezekiah didn't rebel like Zedekiah, but he prayed earnestly. God let him live for another 15 years. But still, Manasseh, the most wicked king was born. That guy shouldn't have been born. Hezekiah's refusal to die caused that trouble. But in the good purpose of God, and in accordance with the godly request of Hezekiah, God granted Manasseh repentance in his later life. But it was too late. It ushered in the exile of Judah. The map of Jews was wiped out from the planet earth. Till today, Israel has no recognized international boundaries.

Let's learn to accept things from God gladly knowing He knows best!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸ:πŸ™πŸ -πŸ™πŸ‘

“But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man to stand before me.’”

If we remain faithful, if we remain obedient, even when everyone is going mainstream, we can hope to see the exaltation from the Lord.

David Brainerd was in ministry for just one year. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 29. God uses him to raise up William Carey, Adoniram Judson, Henry Martin, and thousands of faithful missionaries.

Our life may be insignificant, short, and may seem unfruitful, but God promises a reward to those who are faithful in their lifetime or after their death or in heaven or all of them!

God blessed the children of Jonadab for obedience.  And it's a simple thing: abstaining from wine. But remember what Mother Teresa said, "Little things are indeed little, but to be faithful in little things is a great thing."

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸž:𝟚𝟞

"And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the LORD hid them."

God knows how to protect His man. He hid Elijah, Apostle Paul, and even Jesus Christ. He hid Jeremiah and Baruch as well!

He protected Martin Luther and John Wycliffe.

Even recently, in America, God protected some churches from shutting down. They won a lawsuit against the government.

Nothing can snatch us away if the Lord doesn't will so. Also, if the Lord wills to let us die, nothing can prevent it from happening.

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸŸ:πŸ›

“King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, ‘Please pray for us to the LORD our God.’”

Zedekiah didn't listen to God, but he expected God to bless them through the prayer of righteous man, Jeremiah! Is this not what's going on till today? But there's growing a section of professing Christians who neither pray fervently for themselves nor seek their pastor's prayer for themselves!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸ›πŸ :𝟝

"King Zedekiah said, ‘Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.’"

Don't ever name your son ZedekiahπŸ˜‚ This guy is a coward. Yes, it was a difficult time, but that's why courage was all the more needed, leadership was needed. He knew the truth. Everyone knew the destruction was inevitable. But they didn't like the truth. So, they would rather silence the truth and tell lies.

Be careful of yourself when you don't like the truth. Be careful of yourself when you are obsessed with one thing. As Ben Shapiro says, "Facts do not care your feelings"

Bible Reading Reflection from Jeremiah 21-29

[Originally posted in a WhatsApp group (JAC), a daily reading update (reflection) from each chapter of the Bible]

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸšπŸ™:πŸ™πŸ˜

“‘For I have set My face against this city for harm and not for good,’ declares the LORD. ‘It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire.’”

Many people love to quote Jeremiah 29:11, what about trying this verse? Unless one reads this verse and is glad of it, I am sure, he has no reason to be glad reading Jer. 29:11. We must understand any verse in its contact and then apply it! Judgment must come upon Judah for what they had done v14.

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟚:πŸ™πŸ˜

"Do not weep for the dead or mourn for him, But weep continually for the one who goes away; For he will never return Or see his native land."

It was a time when death is better than living! Maybe it will come again! Maybe we are living in it. These days more troubles and more diseases, while the dead never knew all these happening around us. They didn't go through what we are going through.

Of course, it's not advocating death. It just means the times were horrible to live because of sins! Jesus also said, "Weep not for Me, weep for your children." Let's not weep for the dead, let's weep for the living who don't glorify God!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ πŸšπŸ›:πŸ›πŸš

“‘Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams,’ declares the LORD, ‘and related them and led My people astray by their falsehoods and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them or command them, nor do they furnish this people the slightest benefit,’ declares the LORD.”

O how many were the false teacher! Much more than true faithful teachers. It was, is, and will always be. OT and NT writers wrote about it. Jesus himself said in Matthew 7:21-23 that these people will speak the name of Christ, work, and accomplish great things, but on the day of judgment, Christ will cast them out saying, "I never knew you."

1. God hates false teachers.

2. There are many false teachers.

3. People are easily deluded by false teaching.

Consider the following tests:

If you have never known any false teacher, perhaps every teacher you know is a false teacher. And you just are incompetent to find out. A man who is fast asleep doesn't know whether what he is experiencing is real or just a dream. And he doesn't know who else is sleeping or is awakened. A man who is awakened knows he was dreaming and can find out who else is dreaming and who is awakened!

Something like that. If you are saturated in sound doctrine, you will see false teachings when they come. And they are everywhere! Some false teachings are dangerous, others are not that dangerous. Mature Christians are able to discern even small errors.

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟜:πŸ›

"And the LORD said to me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I said, "Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.""

Very good figs and very bad figs. What do we want? God has set for us as it was set for Judah in the days of Jeremiah, as it was set for Israelites in the days of Joshua: to be vessels of honor or dishonor!

The good figs were those taken to captivity, and the bad figs were those who remained in Jerusalem. Captivity was a judgment, but God has a plan for them even in such a situation. God works in a mysterious way!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟝:𝟑

"Behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation."

God said of this pagan king Nebuchadnezzar "My servant." He said of Messiah "My Servant" as well. Whether we like it or not, we all are servants of God. And Believers of Yahweh are called to be children of God, not just servants.

Persecutors, Atheists, Fanatics, Secularists, Heathens, Godless, Wicked, all are servants of God. They think they have control over their own life, but there's a God in heaven high above them! He who knows God needs not to fear those below Him!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟞:πŸ™πŸ™

“Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, ‘This man deserves the sentence of death because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.’”

Jeremiah gave a politically incorrect message. And so, he was on trial to be killed. Well, those guys were not politicians but the priests and the prophets. If a church leader tries to be politically correct and not speak the truth, he may as well try to kill those who speak the truth! Beware!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟟:πŸ™πŸŸ

"Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city become a desolation?"

There may be a time when it's right, best, and safe to serve even a wicked leader! Because even wicked leaders are raised up by God to punish other sinners! So, maybe it's ok to work as a maid or cobbler or dhobi even for Narendra Modi! πŸ˜…

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟠:πŸ™πŸš-πŸ™πŸ›

“Sometime after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke-bars from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: "Go, tell Hananiah, 'Thus says the LORD: You have broken wooden bars, but you have made in their place bars of iron.’””

Who doesn't admire the wit of God? God is very smart and witty. Jesus was asked whether it was right to tax, and He just asked, "Whose image is on the coin?" πŸ˜‚

Moses let his staff turn into a serpent. The kings and courtiers were amazed. Then Pharaoh's magician brought their magical staff-serpent as well. Moses looked ordinary then. But God let Moses' staff swallow all the magician's snakes. πŸ˜…What a Grandmaster move by God! 😎

Hananiah made a sensation gesture in breaking the yoke that Jeremiah had upon his neck. Wow! Very smart. The narrative seems to suggest Hananiah was more outspoken than Jeremiah. Then God outsmarted Hananiah by coming up with an "iron yoke" that cannot be broken. And then v17, Hananiah was struck dead by God!

Don't try to outsmart God! We can't!

𝕁𝔼ℝ𝔼𝕄𝕀𝔸ℍ 𝟚𝟑:𝟟

"But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."

A good reason why we need to pray for the welfare of the society: for the rulers, leaders, politicians, doctors, teachers.

Well, we do want them to be saved (become Christians), but we also want them to be good for our sake. If they are insane, we will suffer! If they are stupid, they will make stupid laws and decisions.

Don't pray only for their salvation when you pray for rulers. Pray for your own sake. Even if they march to hell, let them not torture you.

A good selfish prayer huh! πŸ˜…πŸ‘
